An SEO audit isn't just about finding errors. The useful part is understanding which issues genuinely matter, how they affect the site and what should be prioritised.

I don't simply run your website through an auditing tool and send over the output. I review the site myself, combine data from different sources and look at the wider picture - including organic visibility, technical SEO, content, tracking and how the website is structured.

With more than 25 years of experience developing, configuring and optimising websites, I can look beyond the SEO symptoms and understand how the site works underneath. My development background also helps me turn technical findings into practical requirements and work directly with the people responsible for implementing them.

You'll deal directly with me throughout, from the initial review to explaining the findings and helping put them right. The result is a practical audit built around your website and priorities, rather than a generic list of SEO checks.

Every website is different, so I shape the audit around the site, its history and the questions we need to answer.

I use a combination of specialist tools, performance data and manual checks to review 226 metrics across 325 checkpoints, but the point isn't to produce the longest possible list of findings.

The aim is to identify the things that are genuinely affecting performance and turn those findings into useful actions.

understand what's happening

I start by understanding the website, its history, what has changed, where your concerns lie and what you need the audit to answer.

That might be a decline in organic traffic, rankings that have stalled, indexing problems, a technically complicated website, underperforming landing pages or simply the need for a reliable benchmark of the site's current SEO health.

review the website in detail

I then review the areas that influence how search engines crawl, understand, index and rank the site.

That includes technical configuration, content, site structure, search visibility, tracking and other areas relevant to the website.

identify and prioritise the findings

Not every SEO issue deserves the same level of attention.

I separate important problems and opportunities from lower-priority observations, so you have a clearer idea of what needs attention first and where the biggest potential impact is.

agree what happens next

Once the audit is complete, I'll talk you through the findings, help agree the next steps and support implementation where required.

That might mean I make some of the changes myself, work with your developers or provide clear requirements for your internal team or agency.

A full website SEO audit looks beyond individual technical errors to understand what may be affecting organic performance and how the different issues relate to one another.

The exact scope depends on the website, but typically includes the following areas.

search visibility and organic performance

I review how the site is performing in organic search, including its important pages, keyword visibility, traffic patterns and any signs that particular sections may be underperforming.

This provides the context needed to judge whether the technical and content findings are likely to have a meaningful impact.

crawling and indexation

I check whether search engines can efficiently discover, crawl and index the pages that matter.

This can include areas such as:

  • crawlability
  • indexation
  • robots directives
  • canonical tags
  • XML sitemaps
  • redirects
  • duplicate URLs
  • crawl behaviour
  • internal linking
  • URL structure

technical seo

Technical problems can make it harder for search engines to access, understand or process a website properly.

I review areas including:

  • page rendering
  • mobile usability
  • site speed
  • Core Web Vitals
  • schema markup
  • HTTPS and security
  • technical page configuration
  • site architecture
  • redirects and status codes
  • duplicate or conflicting signals

content and on-page seo

I also look at whether important pages match what people are searching for, satisfy the likely intent behind those searches and make their purpose clear to search engines.

This can include:

  • page titles
  • H1s and headings
  • meta descriptions
  • page content
  • duplication
  • keyword targeting
  • content gaps
  • page structure
  • image optimisation
  • internal linking

Where a website needs a much deeper content-specific review, I can also carry out a separate content audit.

analytics and tracking

SEO decisions are only useful when the data behind them can be trusted.

Where relevant, I review the site's analytics and tracking setup for problems that could distort how its performance is measured.

For more detailed tracking requirements, I also offer dedicated website tracking audits and Google Analytics consultancy.

site-specific seo requirements

Depending on the website, the audit can also take account of areas such as:

A technical SEO audit focuses primarily on how a website is built and how search engines interact with it.

That can include crawling, indexation, rendering, site architecture, redirects, canonicalisation, structured data, mobile usability and performance.

Those areas are an important part of my audits, but technical SEO isn't always the reason a website is struggling.

A site can be technically sound and still underperform because important pages are poorly targeted, content is unclear, internal linking is weak, search intent isn't being satisfied or tracking is giving an incomplete picture of performance.

That's why my full website SEO audits consider both the technical foundations and the wider SEO factors around them.

If you already know you have a particular technical problem, I can focus the work accordingly. If you're not sure what is causing the issue, a wider audit is usually the better starting point.

The goal is to give you an audit you can actually use.

Rather than leaving you with a long list of unexplained issues, I organise the findings so you can understand:

  • what has been found
  • why it matters
  • how important it is
  • what needs to change
  • what should be tackled first
  • where there are opportunities to improve
  • who may need to be involved in implementing the work

The recommendations reflect your website, resources and priorities. An easily fixed issue with a meaningful impact should come before a technical warning that makes little practical difference.

I'll talk you through the findings and can work with your developers, designers, marketing team or external agency where further explanation or technical input is needed.

Finding the problems is only useful if the right changes are made afterwards.

Once the audit is complete, I can help implement the recommendations or work alongside the people responsible for making the changes.

Depending on what the audit uncovers, that might involve improvements to:

  • title tags and headings
  • page content and structure
  • internal linking
  • schema markup
  • site speed

I can carry out the audit independently or work alongside marketing teams, digital agencies and web developers where the findings need input from several people.

My role is to identify what is holding the site back, explain what needs to change and help turn the findings into practical actions that the right people can actually implement.

If you need broader support across an internal team, you can also find out more about how I work with in-house teams.

Once the main audit and optimisation work is complete, I can continue to help when you need further input.

There's no requirement to move into a long-term retainer. Some clients need regular help while others simply come back when something changes or a new problem appears.
