Dave Ashworth - Expert Wordpress SEO Consultant

technical wordpress seo from someone who understands the site underneath the plugins

WordPress is flexible and SEO-friendly, but themes, plugins, page builders and years of website changes can leave behind technical problems that limit search visibility and performance.

I help businesses audit, fix and improve WordPress websites across technical SEO, content, site structure, internal linking, performance and tracking.

Because I understand WordPress at code level as well as from an SEO perspective, I can often implement the changes directly rather than simply handing you a list of recommendations for somebody else to fix.

what clients say about working with me

Dave's a former agency colleague and I've long admired his expertise and approach. My agency needed to do some SEO work on our website and he was the obvious choice, given Dave's hard-earned reputation as an expert who can deliver high impact advice and guidance in a nonsense-free manner.

Needless to say I'm already seeing organic performance improvements to my site after a couple of weeks, but more importantly, I am able to understand why it is happening, thanks to Dave explaining the work he's done and the outcome he expected to see. He's the sort of expert that doesn't 'gatekeep' his expertise. He is happy to make actionable recommendations that I am able to do myself. Of course, I'll be hiring him again this month to take care of some of the more technical stuff.

I would strongly recommend Dave if you're a web publisher who wants work doing that will result in rapid improvements to your organic performance, done in a way which is safe, ethical and sustainable.

A lot of WordPress SEO advice stops at installing an SEO plugin and filling in a few fields.

I take a wider view of the website, including what the theme outputs, how templates are structured, which pages search engines can crawl and index, how plugins affect the site and whether the content and internal linking support the pages you actually want to rank.

My technical and development background means I can also work directly in WordPress when changes need to go beyond standard plugin settings.

I start by understanding what the website needs to achieve and where the existing search performance is falling short.

From there, I review the WordPress setup itself as well as the wider SEO picture: templates, plugins, indexation, site structure, content, internal links, performance and tracking.

The aim is to identify which problems are actually affecting the site rather than applying a generic list of WordPress SEO recommendations.

I then prioritise the work and, where practical, implement the fixes directly.

A WordPress SEO audit looks at both the website's search performance and the platform-specific issues that may be contributing to it.

I can review:

  • crawlability and indexation
  • site architecture and URL structure
  • WordPress templates and page output
  • SEO plugin configuration
  • duplicate and low-value pages
  • categories, tags and archive pages
  • metadata and canonical tags
  • schema and structured data
  • internal linking
  • content quality and page targeting
  • site speed and Core Web Vitals
  • analytics and conversion tracking

The output is a prioritised view of what needs fixing rather than an automated report full of issues that may not actually matter.

WordPress can create technical SEO problems through themes, plugins, taxonomy pages, URL structures and templates even when the visible website appears to be working normally.

I can investigate crawl and indexation problems, duplicate pages, canonical tags, redirects, XML sitemaps, schema, template output and other technical signals that influence how search engines understand the site.

Where possible, I can implement those fixes directly within WordPress or the theme rather than leaving you with a technical specification and no way to put it into practice.

Plugins and themes can make WordPress incredibly flexible, but they can also introduce duplicate functionality, unnecessary code, conflicting SEO signals and performance problems.

I can review the existing plugin and theme setup, identify where configuration or code is creating SEO problems and decide whether the best solution is to reconfigure, replace, remove or modify what is already there.

I work with common SEO plugins such as Yoast SEO and Rank Math, but I do not treat the plugin as the SEO strategy. The important thing is what the website actually outputs and whether search engines receive the right signals.

I can also work with page builders and custom themes where their templates, markup or performance need more technical attention than a standard plugin setting can provide.

Good technical setup will not compensate for pages that target the wrong searches or a website structure that makes important content difficult to find.

I can improve page targeting, titles, headings, content structure and internal linking so important pages are easier for both users and search engines to understand.

I also review how WordPress categories, tags, archives and other automatically generated pages fit into the wider site so they support the structure rather than creating unnecessary duplication.

WordPress performance problems often come from a combination of themes, page builders, plugins, third-party scripts, images, caching and hosting rather than one obvious cause.

I can identify what is slowing the website down and make practical improvements to reduce unnecessary code, improve loading behaviour and strengthen Core Web Vitals where the existing setup allows.

The aim is not simply to chase a PageSpeed score. It is to make the website genuinely faster and remove avoidable performance problems that affect users and search visibility.

SEO improvements are much more useful when the website also measures what visitors do after they arrive.

I can implement and troubleshoot GA4, Google Tag Manager, advertising conversion tracking and other measurement requirements directly within WordPress.

If the tracking problems extend beyond WordPress itself, I can also review the wider analytics and tracking setup.

I can work directly with business owners or alongside marketing teams, digital agencies and web developers where different parts of the WordPress website are already managed by different people.

My role is usually to take ownership of the SEO and technical requirements while your existing team continues to manage design, development, content or wider marketing activity.

Because I can work directly with WordPress code as well as SEO, I can also bridge the gap between recommendations and implementation when an issue sits somewhere between marketing and development.

If you need broader specialist support across an internal team, you can also find out more about how I work with in-house teams.

WordPress SEO connects technical setup, content, performance, tracking and the wider structure of the website.

The work can form part of a broader website SEO audit, a website migration or ongoing SEO consultancy where WordPress is the platform underneath the wider project.

The aim is to make WordPress work for the SEO strategy rather than allowing the limitations or accumulated complexity of the platform to dictate what is possible.

WordPress websites continue to change as plugins are updated, themes evolve, new content is added and new features are introduced.

I can provide ongoing or ad-hoc support to review performance, fix technical problems, optimise new pages and make sure future WordPress changes do not undermine the SEO work already in place.
